Event description

Description

Paul Blomfield MP will host an evening reception on behalf of the Office for Fair Access, in the Terrace Pavilion at the House of Commons on Wednesday 14th March at 7.30pm.

Since it was established in 2004, the Office for Fair Access (OFFA) has promoted and safeguarded fair access to higher education in England for people from low income backgrounds and other under-represented groups. Professor Les Ebdon has been Director of Fair Access to Higher Education since September 2012.

From April 2018, the new Office for Students will take over OFFA’s work as well as many other important aspects of English higher education regulation and funding currently carried out by the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE). We welcome the creation of the Office for Students and believe that it has great potential to bring about a transformational step change in fair access.

There have been significant improvements in access and success for under-represented groups since OFFA was established. More young people from disadvantaged backgrounds are now entering higher education than ever before, and progress has accelerated in recent years.

Despite the welcome progress that has been made, there is still a long way to go before everyone who has the potential to benefit from higher education has equal opportunity to participate and succeed.

This evening reception will bring together higher education providers, students and student representatives, politicians, academics, higher education sector bodies, and third sector organisations, to celebrate and reflect on the significant progress that has been made in improving access to higher education, and discuss and debate the challenges that remain.

Please note, attendance at this reception is by invitation only. There are limited places at this event and places are available on a first come first served basis.

Speakers include:

- Paul Blomfield MP

- Sam Gyimah MP, Minister of State for Universities, Science, Research and Innovation

- Shakira Martin, President of the National Union of Students

- Professor Les Ebdon CBE DL, Director of Fair Access to Higher Education

Drinks and canapes served from 7.30pm
