Returning to Live at All Hallows for the third time are one of the most exciting acts on the contemporary folk scene. Belinda O’Hooley and Heidi Tidow are accomplished interpreters of everything from Massive Attack to traditional Irish ballads, but it's their own boundless songwriting and exquisite harmonies that truly shine. Their new album The Hum, produced by Mercury nominated Gerry Diver has been hailed as one of the albums of the year, with a Guardian feature, extensive airplay, and live sessions on Radio 2, Radio 4’s Woman’s Hour and 6 Music. After listening to The Hum, the duo received a personal invite from Billy Bragg to perform on his Leftfield Stage at Glastonbury.
They have the originality and skill to invite comparison with the folk scene's most celebrated North American harmony duos, from early Simon and Garfunkel to the iconic Kate and Anna McGarrigle. Lyrically and musically, Belinda and Heidi’s powerful, deeply moving, and at times spine-tingling performances are infused with an honesty and empathy that will disarm even the hardest of heart.
Since the 2012 release of their second album The Fragile (**** Guardian, Mojo, Songlines, Uncut), West Yorkshire duo Belinda O’Hooley (Unthanks, Nic Jones Trio) and Heidi Tidow have become a must-see act for their ‘stunning and delightfully unconventional’ (Guardian), emotionally charged performances.
This earned them a nomination for ‘Best Duo’ in the 2013 BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards, with The Guardian hailing them as ‘The Best Act of Cambridge Folk Festival’. As well as high praise for their beautiful, interweaving harmonies and sublime musicality, they are acknowledged as one of the strongest songwriting partnerships on the contemporary folk scene. The Hum reveals the pulsing undercurrent of optimism, grit and mettle in migrating people, the oppressed, and the disenfranchised. Both lyrically and musically, Belinda and Heidi’s powerful, thought provoking and deeply moving performances are infused with an honesty and empathy that will disarm even the hardest of heart.
Belinda and Heidi have been Live At All Hallows favourites since we started doing these gigs. This is the third time they've headlined for us, and they also performed for us in April '14 as part of the Lucy Ward band, meaning they get the "most gigs at LAAH" crown.....
Combining captivating, ethereal music with an earthy sense of humour and a generous dose of human kindness and solidarity, O'Hooley & Tidow embody the Live at All Hallows team's "ideal artists to book".... and we're very excited to be able to host them once more.
There will be no support act for this gig as Belinda and Heidi have promised us two sets themselves...
UPDATE 21st November:
We are excited to announce that The Real Junk Food Project @ All Hallows are opening their Cafe especially for us next Friday 28th November between 6pm and 8pm before the O'Hooley & Tidow gig. This means that you can enjoy a lovely main meal and/or a scrummy dessert before the gig; plus there will be a pop-up LAAH bar in the Cafe area so you can accompany your meal with a drink should you wish.
The Real Junk Food Project intercepts food that would otherwise go to waste from supermarkets, restaurants and a number of other sources, and turns it into delicious, nutritious meals for visitors on a pay-as-you-feel donation basis. For more information see their website and please do consider liking their facebook page
Doors for the gig itself will open at 745pm as usual, along with the full Live At All Hallows bar including local craft ale.... but we hope you might fancy making it a full night out by joining us for a meal beforehand?
