About this Event

OKHA + SHADO MAG

We’re excited to announce that we’ll be joining Shado Mag's residency as the Bermondsey Project on Saturday, February 15th to host another OKHA Workshop! Last year we had a workshop at Black Girl Fest 2019 and it was one of the most powerful sessions we’ve ever had. We had about 40 of our fam join us and engage fully in the works we presented them with - works by queer black people that focused on change, loss and rebellion.

This time we’ll be providing you with exerts from Sista! An Anthology of writings by Same Gender Loving Women of African / Caribbean descent with a UK connection which is edited By our Qween Mother Phyll Opoku-Gyimah, Rikki Beadle-Blair and John R Gordon. This anthology is truly amazing and whilst we won’t be able to read all 31 contributors’ we do urge you to grab a copy and do so, cos it’s seriously good.

This event will be part of a 2-week residency between 11th - 22nd February at Bermondsey Project Space that Shado is hosting in celebration of LGBTQI+ month.

The residency is celebrating and combining the work of organisations working on the ground and artists using their work as a tool for advocacy.

Alongside the exhibition, there is a a programme of events with local organisations including creative writing workshops, spoken word evenings and book clubs all celebrating the diverse contributions of London’s LGBTQI+ community.

You can find Shado Mag on Instagram @shado.mag and www.shado-mag.com

This OKHA session will also be raising funds for Say It Loud - https://www.sayitloudclub.org/ - a UK based LGBT+ Refugee and Asylum Seekers charity. We will only have 20 tickets for this workshop due to space with a price of £2.50 or £5 depending on what you can afford. All proceeds go to Say It Loud.

Let’s show out for our fam and feel good doing it!

Brought to you by PRIM

PRIM is a platform for storytelling launching in 2K20. Follow @prim.black for info - soon land.

OKHA means story/tale in the Edo language of Nigeria. It is a new community focused space aiming to bring people together, in particular, queer and black people. We do however, want this to be a fully inclusive space meaning being queer is not a prerequisite for attendance but a clear indication of the tone and energy of the space.

OKHA is ever evolving and we are constantly learning. We appreciate you for being interested and for contributing so positively when you come. Be sure to be patient with us and always speak your mind, let us know what we're missing, what we can do better and how to ensure we keep the 'us' and the 'we' forever at the centre of what we do.
