OKO & TIM BERNE
Fri 11 March 2016, 20:00 – 23:00 GMT
DJackulate (turntables, sampler, uileann pipes, kaval) Shane Latimer (eight-string guitar, electronics) Darragh O’Kelly (keyboards, synthesizers) Shane O’Donovan (percussion, sampler)
Tim Berne (Saxophone)
Irish band OKO improvise on skeletal compositions, drawing on a wealth of influences such as krautrock, vintage TV shows, free jazz, noise, ambient, dub, drum ‘n’ bass, dubstep, musak, hip-hop, IDM and more. One of the most exciting live bands in Ireland, OKO has been winning over audiences since their 2014 debut album ‘I Love You Computer Mountain’.
A pillar of modern jazz and recently ranked in the Top 10 of Time Out New York’s “Essential NYC Jazz Icons” Tim Berne’s reputation precedes him. One of the definitive geniuses behind NYC’s downtown 1980s jazz scene, Berne has remained committed to exploring the small group jazz idiom with a series of gritty, head-turning bands that have helped propel younger players such as Jim Black, Craig Taborn and Ches Smith into alt-jazz stardom.
This performance sees the Berne and OKO together onstage as a single entity, fusing aspects of both acts into something new & exciting.
Without doubt, this gig promises to be one of the highlights of Brilliant Corners 2016. Expect a night of music that shifts from lush synth-drenched sculptures to tight hooks, loose grooves, robust scratching, and liberated improvising.
“If you like your sonic fields wide and cerebral, then this is the band for you” The Irish Times
“Berne’s solos are inventive and tangled, wrapping around ideas like a rat snake” Pitchfork
