About this event

  • Event lasts 2 hours 15 minutes
  • Ages 14+

The bell ringers of All Saints, Glossop, are offering dedicated hour-long workshop to teach you some of the basics of bell ringing. This is a taster event, open to all, but especially aimed at those who might want to learn to ring to join the regular band.

Each workshop will offer you the chance to chime a bell and learn the first stages of bell handling, including controlling the rope, ringing the bell up, and possibly standing the bell. Money taken from ticket sales will go to the tower and church funds.

For those who are interested in learning how to ring, our usual practices take place on Thursday evenings, the main practice running from 7-8.30pm.

Frequently asked questions

Can anyone participate in this workshop?

For this event we are willing to teach anyone over the age of 14. Those aged 14-18 will need to be accompanied by a parent/ guardian for the entire session. Please inquire first if unsure.

How physically able do I need to be?

Access to the ringing gallery is via 17 steps on the spiral staircase, though the staircase has a handrail and is decently lit. Ringing itself requires reasonable physical ability, coordination, and a sense of timing.

I am interested in learning to ring, is this workshop for me?

Yes! Come along and have a go. The workshop will offer an hour-long dedicated session, an opportunity to handle the bell and lots of advice.

This is a taster session. But how long does it take to learn to ring?

To learn to ring properly requires a series of lessons, held over a number of weeks—like learning how to drive a car. Our practices take place on Thursday evenings, and we ring every Sunday morning at 10am.
