Description

Talk and Demonstration by Dr Chantal Brotherton-Ratcliffe
Sotheby's Institute of Art, 30 Bedford Square

Today a would-be artist can walk into an art shop and in ten minutes buy canvases, brushes and tubes of paint in every shade imaginable, including neon. Nothing could be farther from the conditions in which painters of earlier centuries worked. Every item used in the production of a painting had to be made in the painter’s own studio before he could begin to paint. This demonstration will provide insight into some of the techniques and materials of Old Masters. Participants will be introduced to some of the labours and limitations of Old Masters paint studios, and to the ingenuity with which painters solved problems - you should emerge from this session full of astonishment and admiration at the sheer skill with which they manipulated often intractable materials. Finally, using the Institute’s study collection of paintings, we will examine the effects of time or accident on paintings, and examples of restoration.
