Event description
Hear the acclaimed author Olivia Laing discuss her timely new book, Everybody, in conversation with leading psychotherapist Susie Orbach

About this Event

Join us to hear the acclaimed author of The Lonely City, Olivia Laing, as she discusses her urgent new book, Everybody. Olivia will be joined in conversation by the therapist and social critic Susie Orbach, author of the classic, groundbreaking work, Fat is a Feminist Issue.

Subtitled ‘A Book About Freedom’, Everybody is an ambitious and electrifying investigation into the body as a source of pleasure and of pain; bodies in peril and bodies as a force for change. Begun during the refugee crisis of 2015 and completed as Covid-19 began to sweep the globe, it’s a book that reminds us of our physical vulnerability; it also celebrates how the body can be used to resist oppression and reshape the world.

Drawing on the author’s own experiences of illness, protest and alternative medicine, Everybody takes us on a journey through the great freedom movements, from gay rights to civil rights to feminism and beyond. Along the way, it introduces us to the life of the renegade psychoanalyst Wilhelm Reich, and weaves in the stories of figures ranging from Christopher Isherwood to Malcolm X, Susan Sontag to Nina Simone.

Even in our digital and automated era, the body remains a source of power. Everybody brilliantly and inspiringly reminds us that the future is, literally, in our hands.

Olivia Laing is the author of three acclaimed works of non-fiction, To the River, The Trip to Echo Spring and The Lonely City, which has been translated into seventeen languages. Her first novel, Crudo, was a Sunday Times bestseller and won the 2019 James Tait Memorial Prize. She is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature and in 2018 was awarded a Windham-Campbell Prize for non-fiction. Her collected writing on art, Funny Weather: Art in an Emergency, was published in 2020.

Susie Orbach is a psychotherapist, psychoanalyst, writer and social critic. She co-founded The Women's Therapy Centre in 1976, and is the author of many books including the best-selling classic Fat is a Feminist Issue; Hunger Strike; On Eating; The Impossibility of Sex and Bodies. Her latest book, In Therapy, was originally broadcast as a Radio 4 series, and draws back the veil on how psychotherapy really works.
