Psychoanalysts Jamieson Webster and Adam Phillips discuss Webster’s beautiful and expansive essay, On Breathing, at Foyles.
Why do we so easily forget the air that we breathe in common? In On Breathing, Jamieson Webster draws on psychoanalytic theory and reflections on her own experiences to conjure a compassionate and timely exploration of air and breathing as a way to undo the pervasive myth of the individual. Deeply perceptive and moving, Webster’s work shows our profound dependence on one another, and the way this important aspect of life has been neglected.
Jamieson Webster is a psychoanalyst in New York City. She is the author of several books, and a regular contributor to the New York Review of Books.
Adam Phillips is a practising psychoanalyst and a visiting professor in the English department at the University of York. He is the author of numerous works of psychoanalysis and literary criticism, including most recently On Giving Up. He is also General Editor of the Penguin Modern Classics Freud translations.
