About this event

Priscilla Edwards and Jennifer Collier are both textile Graduates of Manchester Metropolitan University and both have led the way in combining mixed media into their textile work.

Jennifer broke new ground when she started creating 3D textile work using paper including dresses, stiletto shoes and bird boxes.  Priscilla also works in 3D, but her approach to embroidery takes stitch to a new dimension within wire sculptures.

Whilst they have their different techniques, both enjoy incorporating found objects, ephemera and vintage pieces into contemporary work that shows traditional textiles in a modern form.

Join us in listening to them talk about their time at MMU, how they developed into the innovative textile artists they are today, and what comes next.

Please note that this ticket is for the recording of the event that took place in January 2024.

The recording is not downloadable and will be available for viewing for at least one month after registration.

Priscilla Edwards

Award winning artist Priscilla Edwards began creating sculptural textiles while studying embroidery at Manchester Metropolitan University during the 1990’s. It was here she was encouraged to nurture her love of found materials and transform the lost and overlooked into arresting works of art. These charming yet slightly dark fairy-tale like sculptures transcend the familiar qualities of the original materials and capture Priscilla’s perceptions of beauty, fragility and intrigue.

Once drawn into her enchanting world of afternoon tea, angelic angles and faux flora it's hard not to be captivated by Priscilla’s inquisitive imagination. During this illustrated talk Priscilla will share her inspiration and techniques inviting you to take a peek into her world of making.

Over the past 20 years Priscilla has developed a unique range of manipulation methods using hand and machine stitching combined with wire, fabric, wax and found objects to create pieces full of wit and charm. After completing her BA in Embroidery Priscilla established her practice at the centre of contemporary applied art in the UK and has also exhibited across Europe and the USA.

Priscilla loves to share her passion for textiles with others and has taught in many textile and fashion departments including the University of Cumbria and University of Salford, she now tutors for the Open College of the Arts. Other teaching includes workshops, short courses and presentations about her work.

During 2022 Priscilla authored her first book, ‘Sculptural Textile Art’ published by Search Press. In this exciting new book Priscilla shares all her creative techniques encouraging you to explore 3D textiles for yourself!

Jennifer Collier

Paper pioneer Jennifer Collier creates exquisite sculptures from vintage recycled materials in conjunction with stitch; a contemporary twist on traditional textiles. The papers serve as both the inspiration and the media for the work, with the narrative suggesting the forms. Through this marriage of unlikely materials old papers are transformed into something truly unique, delicate and complex.

Jennifer completed a BA (hons) in Textiles (Print, Knit and Weave) in 1999 at Manchester Metropolitan University, and has had her work featured in over 100 magazines and over 15 books to date, including Thames and Hudson’s ‘Encore: The New Artisans’.

Jennifer is internationally exhibited and has stocked galleries such as the Museum of Art and Design, in New York, Liberty and the V&A.
