About this event
Join this pre-recorded online workshop Creative Hands with Sabine Kaner.
In this workshop you will be learning how to decorate and construct an Embroidery wrap solely using hand stitching. The wrap is made of felt and is designed to hold embroidery threads and tools. The wrap folds into three sections, decorated with fabric scraps, left over felt pieces, buttons and ribbon to tie up.
The decorative design on the outside consists of 3 cut-out hands (template provided as PDF) on top of which is a layer of geometric shapes and stitches. The folded wrap has space with its various pockets to hold approximately eight embroidery bobbins, pins, needles, needle threaders, scissors, safety pins to hold buttons and beads and a small purse for miscellaneous items.
This tactile design is an opportunity to discover the potential of hand stitch and felt, and enjoy the playfulness of shapes and colours, whilst creating a useful item which could become an invaluable companion to the embroiderer, or stitcher especially when travelling.
We are running a number of short workshops and demonstrations which are £2.99 for members and between £10 and £15 for non-members. As well as upcoming events, members can also access recordings of past workshops at a reduced price, to watch at their leisure.

Sabine Kaner
Sabine Kaner is a fine art textile artist working solely with hand stitch and mixed media. Her work focuses on storytelling, particularly on some of the missing narratives and challenging topics in today’s society.
Sabine’s process of making has been evolving over many years, always looking at new materials and learning new techniques. Central to this has always been her use of re-purposed fabrics and materials wherever possible. She likens her needle and thread to drawing and mark-making.
The title and design of this workshop was inspired by the hands that often appear in her work; they denote the underlying symbolism that characterises each individual piece created.
‘There is a magic touch, a tender touch, the human touch’ (Sabine Kaner, 2022)
What you will need to do to start the workshop
You will need to cut out the patterns from the templates provided for the project (please cut them out prior to the workshop). Find them on Dropbox, the link will be available on the Online Event Page.
How to prepare for the workshop
The templates for the embroidery pattern come as PDFs (and can be downloaded and printed out, to prepare for the workshop – see, 1 – A3 felt-fabric substrate template; 2 – A4 accessories templates; 3 – A4 hand template).
Using tracing paper or kitchen paper, trace carefully around each one of the templates to create your pattern.
Attach your felt to your pattern pieces with pins and cut out.
You will need to use your ‘hand’ pattern piece to create 3 hands.
Save all the felt scraps for the geometric decoration on the outside of the embroidery wrap.
