The aim of the workshop is to give an introduction to needlelace. There are many forms of needlelace but this workshop will concentrate in particular on needlelace techniques used in Stumpwork.
The first part of the workshop will be demonstrating the basis of setting up a needlelace pad and the cordonnet, as well as 3 basic stitches. The second part of the workshop will allow participants to make a start on the project by switching the thread cordonnet with a wired one to create a detached element for the pink poppy.
At the end of the workshop, students should be able to carry on with the project at their leisure following the instructions provided in the pattern.
Please note that this ticket is for the recording of the event that took place on 15 April 2024.
The recording is not downloadable and will be available for viewing for at least a month after registration.

Your Tutor
After level 1 and 2 City and guild in Stumpwork, Loetitia Gibier learnt all the traditional hand embroidery techniques she could before starting to design her own work. Having received multiple awards in the Embroiderers’ Guild Members’ Challenge, she is the designer and owner of Korry’s Little Shop, an online shop specialised in goldwork and difficult to find supplies for embroidery and textile art. Her tutorials are a regular feature in Stitch Magazine and she describes herself as an embroidery technician obsessed with colour.
Required Materials List:
- Some calico for the needlelace pad – a fat quarter is more than enough
- Sticky back plastic – 25x20cm is enough
- Cotton or polyester sewing thread such as Gutermann sew all, or cotton 50wt – good quality as it needs to be strong
- Paper covered wires – I recommend a thinner gauge such as 30 or 32g
- A small embroidery needle (size 10) and a blunt needle such as a tapestry size 28
- Good lighting
Threads recommended for needlelace:
- DMC fil a dentelles (or other brand)
- Cotton perle thread in size 12 or 16 (not thicker)
- Stranded cottons but for the cordonnet it is recommended to use a stronger thread such as a perle or fil a dentelle
- Cotton a broder
- Silk perle or stranded – mulberry silk does really nice perle silk
To complete the poppy brooch project additionally, you will need:
- Ultrasuede or felt – at least 9 x 16cm. Ultrasuede is recommended for its high friction resistance which is better to create jewellery
- Pelmet vilene – at least 8x14cm
- 1 donut bead or a small polystyrene bead (10mm) cut in half – the donut bead is easier
All of the items above can be found as a kit for £22 from Korry’s Little Shop as well as the items as a standalone purchase. These are not mandatory, participants can use their own stash and a pdf pattern will be provided.
Tools needed:
- Small jewellery wire cutter or a pair of old scissors (to cut the paper covered wires)
- Embroidery scissors
- Dry clear PVA glue
- Something to draw circles with: a compass, template or circular object (circles will be 6 and 7 cm in diameter)
- A white pen to draw on the black ultrasuede
A list of optional materials
- A magnifier – needlelace is a lot easier with a magnifier even if participants don’t use one for other type of stitching
- A Needlelace pillow and lifter stick – whilst Loetitia will be demonstrating with one, it is not essential. They are extremely difficult to find nowadays so she will explain how to do needlelace without one.
