About this event
Join this online workshop Let's Stitch Quirky Buildings Together With Julie Stenning.
During this slow stitching workshop, we will create a fabric collage of a quirky building. This workshop is suitable for all levels of ability, beginners can follow the workshop step-by-step and more experienced stitchers can follow the idea and enjoy stitching with others. Drawing skills are not essential, students will be given a range of ideas to choose from.
There are many uses for the final collage, including a framed picture, a panel on a bag and a greetings card.
At the end of the workshop, beginners should have the confidence to use the ideas for their own designs. More experienced stitchers will enjoy the time stitching and go away with some design inspiration.
Julie has a Pinterest board with a collection of ideas for quirky buildings.
She also has a flickr album with another collection of quirky buildings.
If you wish, you can use the roofs, windows, door and house bodies images on the Online Event Page, accessible after registration.
Please note that this ticket is for a recording of the live event on 21 June. Tickets for the live event are available here. You will be emailed access details to the recording by 5 July. The recording is not downloadable but will be available for viewing until at least 5 August, 2025.

Your Tutor
Julie’s engagement with textile art commenced with the encouragement of a colleague and an inspiring workshop led by Angie Hughes. Following this pivotal experience, she joined the Bristol branch of the Embroiderers’ Guild, where she made many friends and attended many workshops and talks which improved her knowledge and skills.
Her network now includes textile artists from Cheltenham, the Wye Valley, and a broader global community, woven together through both local connections and digital collaborations, forming a vibrant source of creativity and inspiration.
Julie’s art thrives on spontaneity; she begins each project with a spark of an idea, allowing the piece to evolve organically. This “serendipitous” approach infuses her work with unique character and makes each creation a delightful surprise.
Julie loves sharing her passion for textile art by leading workshops and supporting community stitching events.
Some of her work was on display in the Textiles Exhibition at Artspace in Cinderford.

A list of materials and tools
Required Tools
- Fabric Scissors or a rotary cutter with cutting board.
- Scissors for cutting thread.
- Needles suitable for hand embroidery.
Recommended tools
- If you wish to create a picture, then find an aperture that is the intended size of your collage. I purchased a ready-made mount from my local frame store, but you could cut one yourself from paper, card or other slightly firm material.
- You may want to use an embroidery hoop, in which case the base fabric listed below needs to be large enough to fit comfortably in your hoop.
Materials
- Fabric to give your work some solidity such as wadding (not polyester) or felt. This piece of fabric should be at least 2 inches taller and 2 inches wider than the intended size for your piece.
- Fabric to represent the sky.
- Fabric to go behind the house (underneath the sky).
- Fabric for the house roof.
- Fabric for the house body.
- Embroidery thread for stitching the house
- Embroidery thread and/or Embellishments (e.g. beads, buttons, charms, sequins) for windows, doors, flowers and clouds).
