We invite frontline Health and Social Care staff to attend a series of on-line training sessions to improve Deaf and Disability Awareness in your work with patients and clients.

Who is this training for? Frontline Staff: Healthcare professionals and frontline staff, including clinicians and non clinicians, GPs, Practice Managers, Receptionists, Administrative and Support staff plus Social Care staff from a multidisciplinary background. Content is framed around health settings.

When and where will these training be held? The complete course offers 6 x 1 hour sessions on-line via Zoom sessions clustered around Thursday lunchtimes during March and April 2023. at 11.00-12.00, 12.30-13.30 and 14.00- 15.00

What is the training about ? The course consists of two modules. Each module addresses a common requirement under the Equalities Act 2010:

Module 1 content covers Reasonable Adjustments for Access and has three different sessions : Physical Disabilities. Deaf and Hearing Impairment, Learning Disabilities (these impairment based sessions are repeated 3 times at 11.00, 12.30 and 14.00)

Module 2 content deals with Accessible Communication and continues reasonable adjustment and has three different sessions: Visual Impairment, Deaf and Hearing impairment and Learning Disabilities (these impairment based sessions are repeated 2 times at 11.00, 12.30 and 14.00)

The sessions under each module addresses the challenges and opportunities for specific impairment groups when accessing health settings. What is reasonably required to redress disadvantage and potential discrimination?

Why is this training important? The experience of disabled people accessing health services and information shows that the Equality Act 2010 has not been complied with, and the Accessible Information Standard has not been enforced. Over the past 12 months, local disabled residents in Tower Hamlets have been creating training modules for frontline staff and health professionals. The modules are aimed at building awareness and understanding of how to better support disabled patients and create an equal health service for all.

Why is this training different?

Developed and delivered by people with lived experience of disabilities through our disability-led partner organisations.
Covers specific impairments: Deaf and hearing impairment, visual, physical and mobility impairments and learning difficulties.
Looks at the patients journey from making an appointment to leaving the consulting room using a series of scenarios
It is interactive
Based on research undertaken in 2021 – 22 with insight from over 450 disabled peoples' experience of access

How will the training be delivered? The main part of the session will be reviewing these lived experiences, through a series of pre-recorded videos of scenarios mostly based around health settings depicting barriers and enabling adjustments.

Who is delivering the training? Real partners, deaf PLUS, ICM Foundation CIC are disability-led voluntary organizations working in Tower Hamlets. This training course is the result of their work with residents with lived experience of a range of impairments. They have produced this training course and a Best Practice Guide to accompany it from their findings and recommendations
