Event description
Almost a decade after the 2012 Games, Stratford continues to transform and evolve.

About this Event

Central to the area’s change is Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, one of the largest urban parks in Europe, and a fundamental connector and driver of culture, education, and longer term social and economic development in east London.

33,000 new homes will be built in the wider area by 2036 (including five new neighbourhoods on the Park), with over 10,000 delivered to date.

A total of 40,000 jobs are expected to be delivered on or around the Park by 2025. Of these, 25,000 jobs will be delivered at International Quarter London – Stratford’s thriving new business district – and 5,000 jobs will be created at the established digital and media technology business cluster at Here East. East Bank, London’s new cultural and education district, will provide over 2,500 jobs, while generating an estimated £1.5bn for the local economy, and bringing an additional 1.5m visitors per year to the Park and surrounding area.

This co-location of world-renowned education and cultural institutions alongside businesses and residential spaces builds on the area’s rich industrial heritage and entrepreneurial spirit in establishing a thriving new creative, innovation hub and metropolitan centre.

The key role of infrastructure in connecting new and existing neighbourhoods, and as an enabler and integrator of communities, should not be underestimated. Now a major London interchange, Stratford is the UK’s seventh busiest station with 120 million trips per year, exclusive of the underground.

This NLA On Location event will examine how LLDC is working with local authorities and communities to shape future development of Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park and the surrounding area in Stratford. What are the opportunities and challenges, and how are plans and policies for the design and delivery of infrastructure, mixed-use neighbourhoods, public green space, educational and cultural spaces helping to ensure the longer-term growth and sustainability?
