Join Voce Writer-in-Residence TAYLOR BURNS for this long-form workshop ON STYLE.
‘There is such an animal as a non-stylist, only they’re not writers — they’re typists.’
—TRUMAN CAPOTE
In this workshop, Taylor will take you through his thoughts on Style — its benefits, demerits, history, practitioners.
The session is an in-depth look at sentence and paragraph and how these things build a book before anything else, at least for Taylor. It will feature detailed breakdowns of text that he thinks represent the essence of style, word by word. Expect rhythm, technique, cadence, vernacular. Style as inescapable despite modern tendencies to overlook a writer’s sentence-making in favour of other modes of delivery: theme, plot, structure, identity, politics. Style across genres. Will a novelist’s criticism allow their style; will a journalist’s fiction suffer without the factual scaffolding? Style is intrinsic, see. It is, as Martin Amis said, morality.
This workshop is supported using public funding by ARTS COUNCIL ENGLAND.
This is one of our WORKSHOP events, with a specific focus on the craft & business of writing, & place-making for writers in the West Midlands.
