Event description

Description

London poets Rakaya Fetuga and Dialectic Dee join Slam Champ of Belgium, Lisette Ma Neza, to host an evening of poetry and song, sharing work inspired by black history and the great people on whose shoulders they stand upon. Join the artists on the open mic, share or just come to listen.

Rakaya Fetuga
Rakaya is a poet from London of Ghanaian and Nigerian heritage. Her work joins conversations on overlapping identities, faith and culture as self-affirmation. Rakaya is a 2019 Roundhouse Resident Artist and winner of the Roundhouse Poetry Slam 2018. As well as sharing her work internationally, Rakaya has performed across the UK at venues including the British Museum, Royal Albert Hall, Trafalgar Square and The Ivy. Rakaya is a member of ::nana:: Poetry Collective.

Lisette Ma Neza
As a kid she wrote poems and sent them to a publisher without asking her parents. At fourteen, her parents got a phone call from the publishers and she got her first book published. She continued writing poems but also started to experiment with filmmaking, theatre and music. Last year she became the National Belgian Champion of Slam Poetry and the runner-up European Champion Slam Poetry and now she travels the world performing. Her poems hold topics that seem to be caused by an inner identity crisis. As she lives in between being a young girl and womanhood. In between cultures, as a black Rwandese girl, in a white European world. Topics such as skin-colour, racism, genocide and growing up with trauma around her. She moves the audience with issues, history and sometimes, maybe, love. Always solutions and always a lot of emotions.

Dialectic Dee
Dee is a 21 year old spoken word artist from London, who aims to use the performing arts for more than just entertainment purposes but rather as a tool to positively impact change. Dialectic Dee's credits of live performances include; Poetic Unity, Battersea Arts Centre, The Errant Stage and SBTV CookOut. Her work with Poetic Unity resulted to her poetry being broadcast live on the Robert Elms Show on BBC Radio London.
She has also performed at the IYAF Kingston Creative Youth Gala Dinner where Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex and many other celebrity guests attended. More recently she was invited to perform at the “Queer poetry jam” event in Finland as part of the Runokuu Helsinki Poetry festival. After finishing a recent Christmas commercial in which she was commissioned by JD sports Dialectic Dee is now currently working on her first EP entitled "Utter Confusion" and transforming her social media. Through her writing she continues to focus on unexpressed yet significant topics that she is passionate about and continues to develop her professional career as a poet, Spoken Word Artist and educator, with the hopes of one day running her own Spoken Word outreach company.
