Event description

Description

Before the Great Fire of London in 1666, there were 111 churches in the City of London. Not all of the 81 destroyed in the fire were rebuilt and of those that were a number were subsequently demolished when they became surplus to requirements as the City’s residential population declined in the latter half of the nineteenth century. The Blitz of the 1940s took its toll on those that remained.

Many of these church buildings disappeared without trace or have their former site marked by a plaque but others still exist as towers or other standing remains. On this tour of these former churches we will consider how remnants of the past have been incorporated into the fabric of the modern City.

The walk takes about two hours. It starts at 1 Poultry (by Bank Station) and finishes at St Dunstan in the East (close to Monument or Tower Hill tube).

Please check travel arrangements on the day at Transport for London's Journey Planner site.
