One-Act Comedy Play Double Feature: Blind Date & The Marriage Proposal
Overview
Summary
The Kaskaskia College Theatre Department is proud to present Blind Date by Horton Foote, and Anton Chekov's The Marriage Proposal .
Blind Date is a one-act play by Horton Foote that explores family expectations, small-town manners, and generational tension. The story takes place in the 1920s in a Southern household, where the well-meaning Aunt Dolores prepares her shy niece Sarah Nancy, for a blind date that Dolores has arranged. Through gentle humor and subtle emotion, Foote highlights the clash between personal authenticity and social convention, revealing how family pressures and expectations can shape—and sometimes stifle—individual identity.
The Marriage Proposal is a one-act farce by Anton Chekov that humorously portrays the absurdities of courtship and petty arguments among the upper class. The story follows Ivan Lomov, a nervous and hypochondriac landowner, who visits his neighbor, Stepan Chubukov, to propose marriage to his daughter, Natalya. However, instead of a smooth proposal, the meeting quickly devolves into ridiculous quarrels over trivial matters like property boundaries and whose dog is better!
Come along and join us for this farcical night of fun that is fit for the whole family!
