About this event

Bird & Bat Box Making for Woodland Wildlife

Join us for a rewarding and hands-on day in the woods, where you'll learn how to craft nest boxes for birds and roost boxes for bats, helping support local wildlife and deepen your connection to the woodland ecosystem. Guided by an experienced tutor, you’ll gain practical carpentry skills, learn about the habitat needs of native species, and take part in meaningful conservation work at Lodge Valley Park.

This one-day course is perfect for anyone with a love for wildlife, a passion for practical skills, or a desire to give back to the natural world. No prior experience is necessary, just a willingness to get stuck in, use tools, and learn by doing.

You’ll construct a range of wildlife boxes using hand tools and pre-cut materials. You’ll also learn how and where to site the boxes to give them the best chance of being used, before heading out to help erect them in suitable spots around the woodland.

At lunchtime, we’ll gather around the campfire to enjoy a hearty, shared meal cooked outdoors, a chance to rest, chat, and soak up the atmosphere of the woods.

Throughout the day you will:

● Build your own bird & bat boxes using simple joinery techniques.

● Learn about the needs and nesting habits of native woodland species.

● Explore the importance of habitat creation and conservation in the wild.

● Develop basic hand tool skills in a supportive, natural setting.

● Erect boxes in the woodland and learn how to monitor and maintain them.

● Enjoy a freshly cooked campfire meal with fellow participants.

Your tutor for this course is James Kendall, experienced bushcraft instructor, wildlife guide, and founder of Woodland Classroom:

“Building bird and bat boxes is a simple but powerful act of conservation. These boxes give nature a helping hand, and building them with your own hands makes that connection personal. It’s a great way to leave a lasting, positive mark on this woodland landscape.”

By the end of the day, you’ll have helped make a lasting contribution to improving local biodiversity at this growing woodland and enjoyed a meaningful day of making, learning, and giving back to the land.

Whether you’re a nature lover, a budding conservationist, or simply curious about woodland wildlife, this course offers a fulfilling and enjoyable experience that supports both your skills and the species we share the woods with.
