About this event

Spend a summer weekend immersed in the living landscape of Lodge Valley Park, learning hands-on woodland management skills that directly support British wildlife and biodiversity.
This two-day course is designed for adult learners with an interest in British wildlife, practical conservation, and traditional woodland skills. Whether you're a budding conservationist, a woodland owner, or simply passionate about the natural world, you’ll gain real experience in seasonal woodland tasks that enhance both habitat and visitor access.
Guided by experienced woodland manager and tutor James Kendall, you’ll take part in a range of practical, hands-on activities that contribute directly to the stewardship of the woodland, including:
● Invasive species control: Identify and remove plants that threaten the biodiversity of the woodland.
● Making your own artist’s charcoal from willow: Create your own drawing charcoal using traditional methods.
● Native tree & wildflower identification: Build your ID skills and deepen your understanding of the woodland ecosystem.
● Creating deadwood habitat: Construct habitat piles & create standing deadwood that support insects, birds, fungi, and small mammals.
● Path & access maintenance: Help keep the woodland open and accessible by clearing overgrown trails and improving pathways for visitors.
● The history and heritage of coppicing & charcoal burning: Learn how these ancient practices supported both people and wildlife for generations.
Safe use of woodland hand tools: Gain confidence using traditional hand tools such as axes, billhooks, and saws under expert supervision.
To complete the experience a camp fire cooked meal will be supplied.

Summer provides an ideal time to work in the woods, with long days, rich greenery, and the full activity of the woodland’s wildlife all around you. Over the course of the weekend, you’ll develop practical skills that can be applied to your own conservation work, woodland ownership, or volunteering.
No prior experience is necessary — just a willingness to get involved and spend a weekend outdoors making a real difference to this beautiful community woodland.
About Your TutorJames Kendall has been working in environmental education, conservation and sustainable woodland management for over a decade. As the former Project Manager for Long Wood Community Woodland — Wales' largest community-owned woodland — James was responsible for the stewardship of over 300 acres of mixed broadleaf and conifer forest, leading a wide range of woodland management operations while working alongside volunteers, community groups and landowners.
James combines his deep practical knowledge with a passion for sharing traditional woodland skills, helping others to develop confidence in working with woodlands in a way that respects both nature and heritage. Speaking about his approach, James says:
"Traditional woodland management skills connect us not only to the land but to a way of life that supported communities for generations. Through simple hand tools, careful observation and an understanding of natural cycles, we can work with the woods rather than against them, creating thriving habitats and sustainable resources."
