One Planet York - A liveable city

Typically in the UK we use the resources of three planets when we only have one. Explore with us York’s progress to a more sustainable, resilient and collaborative ‘One Planet’ future and help chart the course of the journey ahead.

In celebration of the 60th anniversary of York’s twinning with Münster in Germany, Oberburgermeister (Mayor) Markus Lewe tells the story of his city’s progress as a cycling capital and winner of the 2004 LivCom ‘most liveable city in the world’ award. (Booking required)
One Planet York is a growing network of organisations working to build a thriving local economy, strong community and a sustainable way of life; a city where residents are healthy, happy and prosperous.
This event is the One Planet York Partnership's annual gathering, with many of York's biggest and most innovative organisations working towards the One Planet York vision. The event aims to inspire by showcasing local leadership with opportunities to learn, share, discuss and collaborate. One Planet York is hosted and facilitated by City of York Council. Between 14:00 and 17:00 find out more about York’s journey to a sustainable and resilient future by dropping into the One Planet York Expo' in the Ron Cooke Hub innovation space. (No booking required). See practical examples of local leadership across the ten One Planet York principles.
About the speaker: Mayor Markus Lewe was elected Lord Mayor of Münster, Germany for a second time in 2015. As head of the municipal administration he oversees and monitors day-to-day business.
Practicalities: Arrival and orientation from 11:30 for a prompt 12noon start. Food is available from the Ron Cooke Hub cafe throughout the event. There'll be some music too!

OPY FRINGE: Why not continue the fun at our One Planet York mingle. Nationally recognised York Bike Belles will be leading a bike ride from the venue at 5:30pm over Millennium Bridge to the Winning Post pub on Bishopthorpe Road for an informal and sociable wind down.
