Writing Ambitions are offering 30-minute one-to-one sessions with Helen Mort for poets who live, work, or study in Derbyshire.

About this Event

As part of our Writing Ambitions end-of-project celebrations we are pleased to offer a limited number of 30 minute one-to-one sessions online with award-winning poet and novelist Helen Mort via Zoom. Please note that these sessions are reserved for poets who have not yet received a one-to-one session with Helen and who live, work or study in Derbyshire. There are two options to choose from. Please ensure that you scroll down the page to see all of the information including 'how it works'.

Helen Mort is a poet and novelist. She is a five-times winner of the Foyle Young Poets award, received an Eric Gregory Award from The Society of Authors in 2007, and won the Manchester Poetry Prize Young Writer Prize in 2008. Her collection Division Street is published by Chatto & Windus and was shortlisted for the Costa Book Awards and the T.S. Eliot Prize. Her second collection ‘No Map Could Show Them’ was shortlisted for the Banff Mountain Literature Award in Canada. She has published two pamphlets with Tall Lighthouse press.Helen’s first novel ‘Black Car Burning’ was published by Random House in April 2019. In June 2018 Mort was elected Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature. She lectures in creative writing at Manchester Metropolitan University.

Option 1 - Getting Into Poetry

We'll talk about starting to write poetry, tips for inspiration, beginning to publish your work in magazines, performing in public – this is ideal if you are new to poetry or have been writing in private and now want to think about sharing your work more widely.

For this, please submit the following:Any specific questions you have about writing and publishing poetry (maximum 5).A short biography of your writing experience so far (if any), one page maximum.

Option 2 - Poetry Surgery

We will discuss several of your poems in detail and I'll give you feedback on how to redraft them. We can also talk about what 'next steps' you might take to develop your poetry or about themes you'd like to explore in your work. This is ideal if you feel you've got your poems as far as you can and need a fresh pair of eyes.

For this option, please submit the following:A maximum of 5 poems, each no longer than one A4 page. We'll cover as many of these in the session as time allows.A short biography of your writing experience so far, one -page maximum.

Any specific questions you have about your poems or about your writing goals, up to five questions.

How it works

Please book your session and then email the information requested to lovelitderbyshire@hotmail.com by 16th February.

Helen will contact you by email prior to your session on Zoom.

Our project

In 2019 we embarked on a Writing Ambitions literature project offering writers paid commissions working with a Derbyshire based arts festivals, training and mentorship. We are now holding our end-of-project celebrations which include this event.

The project is funded and supported by Derbyshire County Council, Arts Derbyshire including members of Festivity, Writing East Midlands, Junction Arts and supported by Arts Council England with funding from the National Lottery.
