About this event

The link between human health and the quality of our environment has never been more in focus for humanity. However, the challenge of understanding environmental changes, due to climate change and biodiversity loss, and linking these to potential human health impacts and the provision of active choices to change behaviour, remains complex.

The opportunity of greater environmental monitoring at higher resolution from satellites and other devices provides a focus on air quality as an initial area where "One Health" and ecosystem services (the benefits that humans derive from the natural environment and healthy ecosystems) concepts meet. The connection from monitoring across to the modelling of air pollution and mitigation options and the causality modelling for non-communicable diseases such as asthma and type II diabetes provides an opportunity for automatic identification of active travel options and avoidance of air quality hotspot routes and times. The ability to develop a data system or platform to enable decisions relies on complex systems modelling and AI capabilities linked to health analytics, all strengths of Oxford.

We will combine these with expertise from collaborators in earth observation and other geospatial data and health service customers as end-users, providing us with a community and opportunity to address this challenge.

The workshop will bring together these stakeholders to understand requirements, identify existing capabilities to be deployed in early stage tools and to map out a plan for future projects towards a platform for air quality and behaviour change together with a methodology for other One Health challenges. The workshop will be facilitated by the Satellite Applications Catapult, with expertise in complex workshop methodologies with data at the heart.
