Caring for the Carer

Do you struggle to balance caring for your children, parents, a friend or relative with the pressures of day to day life or demands of work?

Do you feel exhausted yet find it difficult to take breaks?

Or maybe you’re struggling with anxiety or sleepless nights amidst so much uncertainty?

Would you maybe benefit from some time and space to explore possible new ways to support your sustained wellbeing and quality of care for those you love?

This course is designed to support those who care for others, developing greater self-care and inner resources that can help manage the significant practical and emotional impacts of caring.

The course provides a safe and encouraging environment to explore the challenges inherent in caring for others and to cultivate resources to alleviate stress and prevent burnout.

Attending the sessions each week and investing in the practices of mindfulness and compassion, this course will offer you the opportunity to:

  • create the physical, mental and emotional space needed to manage the demanding circumstances you face
  • reconnect both with yourself and those around you, hence also improving the quality of care for your loved one(s)

Previous delegates have experienced:

  • Reductions in stress and sense of loneliness
  • Improvements in mental wellbeing and self-care

Through a combination of teaching, the development of mindfulness and compassion practices, group discussion and self-reflection those attending will:

  • cultivate self-care and resilience as a means of maintaining physical, mental and emotional health and preventing burnout
  • nurture a greater understanding of, and explore proactive approaches to, working with difficult emotions
  • develop inner resources to manage tensions in relationships, including an increased ability to stay present and care for loved ones in moments of difficulty
  • cultivate routines and behaviours supportive of longer-term health and wellbeing.

Please note that the first session will provide an overview and introduction to the whole course. Should you feel after this session that the course is not for you, a refund will be available less £20 fee to cover the administration.

Who is this course for?

This course is open to all human beings 🙂

It is ideal for anyone who cares for others: for example those caring for children, elderly parents, relatives and/or friends. Those in caring professions such as social workers, nurses, therapists etc may also find the course helpful as a means of prioritising their own self-care.

Our courses are:

  • Suitable for beginners as well as those wishing to refresh or deepen their mindfulness practice
  • Open to all adults (minimum age 18 yrs, no maximum – our oldest participant to date has been 84 and he completed two courses)
  • Ideal for people who see their health and personal growth as their own responsibility and who like to learn from their experiences, rather than looking for a quick fix
  • Suitable for people of all faiths and people who do not identify with a particular religious or spiritual tradition.

Course Schedule

This course will be taught over twelve classes from 22nd April - 15th July 2021 (excluding 3rd June half term). Each class will be approximately 1.5 hours long and will take place on Thursday evenings from 7:00 – 8:30pm.

The Facilitator

Your facilitator for this course is Robert Broughton. Robert started teaching meditation courses in 2009. Since then he has taught over 100 mindfulness courses within the NHS, Cancer Charities, Hospices and to the public. He has also spoken about mindfulness in healthcare on many occasions and in 2014 he was invited to join Leeds University/White Rose Consortium for Mindfulness in Education research team as an expert member. Robert qualified as a mindfulness supervisor and mentor from Bangor University in 2017. He has also personally experienced long-term caring for others and so brings understanding and empathy for the struggles and paradoxes of caring and balancing our own needs.
