What is Adult Mental Health First Aid (MHFA)?

Our Adult Mental Health First Aid course is the two day internationally recognised mental health awareness course accredited by Mental Health First Aid England.

By the end of the course you'll be able to:

  • Spot the early signs of a mental health issue
  • Feel confident helping someone experiencing a mental health issue
  • Provide help on a first aid basis
  • Help prevent someone from hurting themselves or others
  • Help stop a mental health issue from getting worse
  • Help someone recover faster
  • Guide someone towards the right support
  • Reduce the stigma of mental health issues.

The course is divided into four sections:

  • What is mental health?
  • Suicide and depression
  • Anxiety, eating disorders, and self harm
  • Psychosis

How will I learn?

This course will be a blend of self-learning actives and live interactive sessions with the trainer and other course participants. The total learning time is approximately 16 hours.

The live sessions will be a mix of presentations, group interaction and activities. Our instructors provide a safe learning environment and are trained to support you throughout the whole course. If you don’t feel comfortable joining in certain parts, then there is no pressure to.

Due to some of the sensitive subjects of our courses, we limit our course numbers. We want everyone to feel safe and our instructors can help if people find some parts particularly difficult.

Live Sessions

The Adult MHFA consists of four x 3 hour live sessions with a qualified course instructor as follows:

Session 1 will run on Monday 8th November from 09:30 - 12.30

Session 2 will run on Tuesday 9th November from 09:30 - 12.30

Session 3 will run on Monday 15th November from 09:30 - 12.30

Session 4 will run on Tuesday 16th November from 09:30 - 12.30

You will need to attend all four live sessions for the full duration to complete the course. There will not be an opportunity to catch up on anything that has been missed.

Self-Learning activities

Before each live session you will be required to complete some online learning. This can be completed in your own time but must be completed before each live session. These self learning activities will take between 1 and 2 hours to complete each.

You must complete all online learning activities to complete the course. Please kindly note if you do not complete a set of self-learning activities before a live session, you may no longer be able to participate on the course.

Self-Registration and Course Materials

Once you have registered to attend this course via Eventbrite, you will be required to self-register on the Mental Health First Aid England portal. Once you have self-registered, you will receive a course workbook and an Adult Mental Health First Aid England manual by post. Welcome to West Sussex Mind

We are an independent local mental health charity working in West Sussex.

We aim to promote good mental health through the provision of high quality services and through campaigning to improve services, raise awareness and understanding.

Our services support young people, adults, older adults, carers and families affected by mental health problems. We offer help and advice to people around improving their physical and mental well-being, strengthening their self-esteem and confidence, building strong relationships with family, friends and communities, getting into education, training and work and achieving their personal and social goals.

We also work actively in local communities to raise awareness about mental health and tackle the stigma and discrimination.
