Online Beginner's Shibori binding (Online class)

What will I learn?
In this class you will learn basic shibori binding techniques that provide the perfect introduction to the ancient Japanese craft of Shibori resist dyeing.
Content:
– How to tie the basic kamosage knot used to secure all bound work
– How to make the kanoko (fawn dots), kumo (spiderweb), bai (seashell), and ne maki (wrapped beads) patterns using binding
- How to extend your patterns using these techniques, specifically with
- Te-Kumo Hozuki - kumo with a simple binding thread further out
- Te-Kumo Kani - kumo outer ring - blue centre
- Te-Kumo Ne-maki - kumo with separate, additional binding just beyond the start of the kumo, leaving a white border. Overdyed blue centre.
Who is this class for?: Beginner / looking for an introduction to Shibori
Duration: 2 hours
Location: This class is an Online course run using Zoom. You will need a device that can access the internet with a camera and microphone to take this class.
In the class you will prepare your pieces for dyeing and then dye them afterwards at your own convenience. I will explain how to set up an indigo or Dylon dye bath but you will need to buy your own dye to do this.
What do I need to provide myself?
- Pre-washed calico, cotton or linen fabric
- Strong thread - ideally bonded nylon 60s weight upholstery thread or a strong cotton thread
- Baking beads or marbles
- A fabric marker pen and a ruler
- Small pair of sharp scissors
- Water sprayer
- Dye - either an indigo dye kit or a Dylon hand dye and 250g table salt
- Plastic bucket, stirrer and rubber gloves.
