Online Drawing Discussion with Iain R Webb in association with the exhibition DRAWING FASHION: Sketchbooks from the edge of the catwalk

About this event

Drawing Projects UK is delighted to present this online Drawing Discussion with Iain R Webb held in association with the exhibition Iain R Webb - DRAWING FASHION: Sketchbooks from the edge of the catwalk on Thursday 4 August 2022 at 6pm.

We look forward to welcoming you to this Drawing Discussion with Iain R Webb and Anita Taylor, Director of Drawing Projects UK and Dean of Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design at the University of Dundee.

Throughout Iain R. Webb's longstanding and influential career in the fashion industry, he has drawn from the edge of the catwalk as a form of note-taking. These sketchbooks form a significant visual record of the vast number of influential fashion shows covered by Iain R. Webb, and feature his notational drawings of the collections of ground-breaking fashion designers such as Jean Paul Gaultier, Alexander McQueen, Miuccia Prada, Comme des Garcons, and many more, as they were first revealed on the season's catwalks. The exhibition provides an insight into the fashion industry and forms a record of the last four decades of fashion history. Celebrating drawing as a means of recording, remembering, and communicating, sits at the heart of this exhibition which, simultaneously, celebrates and reveals the workings of the fashion industry.

Iain R. Webb originally studied Fashion Design at St Martin’s School of Art (1977-80). He was appointed Professor of Fashion & Design at Kingston School of Art in 2016 and has previously held Visiting Professor roles at both Central Saint Martins and Royal College of Art. He is currently an associate lecturer at Central St Martins and Bath Spa University.

During his career he has been fashion editor of BLITZ, The Evening Standard, Harpers & Queen, The Times, Elle and Vogue Russia; winning the Fashion Journalist of The Year Award in 1995 (the inaugural year) and 1996. Other journalistic contributions include the New York Times, New Musical Express, The Guardian, The Independent, The Huffington Post, Saturday Telegraph Magazine, V&A magazine, Selvedge, Gut, Rollacoaster, and Shortlist, among others. He is Fashion Features Editor-At-Large of Ponystep magazine. Iain has consulted and collaborated with leading brands including Helmut Lang, Raf Simons for Fred Perry, LVMH, Selfridges, Gucci, Burberry, Cutler & Gross, M&S, Kangol, Ghost, MaxMara, Jigsaw, River Island, and Day, Birger & Mikkelsen. He is author of Bill Gibb - Fashion and Fantasy, Foale & Tuffin: A Decade in Fashion, Postcards From the Edge of the Catwalk, As Seen in BLITZ, Vogue Colouring Book, Marc Jacobs Unseen, John Galliano for Dior and Rebel Stylist, among others. His latest publication is The Fashion Show (published March 2022) - a curated collection of fashion show invitations. Other curatorial projects include exhibitions at the ICA, RCA, Somerset House, MoBA Biennale, Arnhem and Fashion Museum, Bath, where he acts as a creative consultant.

The exhibition and publication is kindly supported by the British Fashion Council, Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Deisgn at the University of Dundee and Kingston School of Art.

The exhibition continues at Drawing Projects UK until Saturday 6 August.
