As part of Greater Manchester Hate Crime Awareness Week (1-7 Feb 2021) we are exploring an aspect of hate crime that has become even more prevalent currently - online hate crime. Salford City Council is pleased to introduce:
Imran Ahmed – CEO, Centre for Countering Digital Hate Crime, will explore:
Online Hate Crime
- Identity based hate crime – the current picture, individual and society consequences for 2021.
- Perpetrator and platform motivations.
- National, local and individual strategies to counter online hate.
Counter Terrorism Policing North West Prevent Team examine:
Online extremism
- links between hate crime and extremism.
- current extremist groups such as the 'incel' online subculture.
- support for vulnerable individuals.
The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) looks at:
Freedom of speech
- The legal basis and history of freedom of speech – Human rights Act, European Convention on Human Rights.
- Where this freedom starts and ends – i.e. becomes an illegal act.
- Examples and case studies.
Opportunities for questions and answers will be available.
Suitable for organisations involved with safeguarding vulnerable people - e.g. health, housing, local authority, voluntary sector, education.
