Event description
Join curator, Dr Rebecca Bridgman to explore Birmingham’s collection of art from the Middle East and South Asia.

About this Event

Dating to the 18th and 19th centuries this collection includes around 1,500 objects from the great Muslim Empires of the Ottomans, Qajars, and Mughals, whose power bases ranged from modern day Turkey, Iran and India. Often referred to as ‘Islamic’ art, this beautiful collection of objects was acquired by Birmingham largely in the late 19th or early 20th centuries as inspiration for Birmingham craftsmen and women.

The talk will incorporate a detailed discussion of one of the star pieces of that collection, a large Iranian textile depicting the historical figures of Yusuf (or Joseph) and Zulaikha (Potiphar’s wife). This amazing hand-painted textile was made in Iran in the 19th century and probably used to depict their poetic love story known throughout world literature.

This online event will be delivered via Zoom. Once you have signed up to the talk, a unique invite will be sent for an online Zoom webinar, along with instructions of how to log on.

Pre-booking is essential. Book tickets online - ticket sales end at 12noon on the day of the event.
