Title: Motivating international postgraduate taught students – narrowing the gap of students’ expectation and university reality

Facilitator: Ann Qian, PhD student, Chester Business School

Abstract: International students, as a continuously growing community, have brought multi-faceted opportunities to the UK Higher Education, and challenges at the same time. Through my daily teaching practices, I have observed some phenomenon which make me wonder what motivates our students to come to study here and what we can do to better motivate them during their time with us. This leads to my research topic - how to better motivate our international students through the lens of psychological contract and motivation theories, with a focus on post-graduate taught students and business schools in the UK.

Biography: After graduating from Shanghai University and Durham University with bachelor’s and master’s degrees in law, Ann took on academic research position in Shanghai, with publications on various legal topics. She then stepped into commercial sector with 8-year extensive experience of Executive Assistant to CEO in SMEs, before joining the University of Chester as Researcher then Lecturer in management.

Bilingual and bicultural, Ann takes pride in mentoring students and seeing them thrive. She focuses on high quality teaching and learning through research-informed practices and delivering outstanding service to diverse student groups in higher education.

The format: Arrival followed by an interactive presentation (20-30 mins max) with opportunity to ask questions (20 mins).
