Title: Qualitative Data Analysis: Using Critical Discourse Analysis to Analyse Text

Facilitator: Associate Professor Andy Lyon

Abstract: The purpose of this presentation is to explain how and why critical discourse analysis (CDA) is a useful analytical tool in qualitative research. If you are looking for ways to analyse qualitative data, CDA can used in any situation which involves issues associated with power, dominance, inequality, and bias. This could include political speeches, management concerns, racial issues, media reports, environmental issues and many more. Some practical examples will be given to show how CDA can be used in a variety of situations.

Biog or link to profile: Dr. Andy Lyon is Head of Commercial Income Projects. His PhD was entitled: Tourism and sustainable development: active stakeholder discourses in the Waterberg Biosphere Reserve, South Africa. The presentation is based on this and publications in 3 and 4 star journal articles.

The format: Arrival followed by an interactive presentation (20-30 mins max) with opportunity to ask questions (20 mins).
