Online Self-Assessment Tax Return Workshop
Overview
Are you a) a freelancer or small business owner & need to complete a self assessment b) nervous about the 31st January tax return deadline? c) having trouble getting down to it? d) not sure how to do it?
If the answer to any of these questions is “yes” then please join me for this informal self assessment workshop.
Whether you’re new to being a freelancer, self-employed or struggle with your self-assessment tax return each year, this course will help you to understand and complete you’re your return.
This course will encourage you to gain a better understanding the tax process better and allow you time within the session to get your tax returns done!
It will help you understand which sections of the return are relevant to you, the taxes you will need to pay, and understand the terminology used within the tax return.
This course has been created in a way that’s easy to understand, so you won’t be overwhelmed by jargon, so you will be confident in understanding and organising your tax return.
I will start by looking at all the sections included with the tax return where we’ll discuss the meaning of different sections and which ones might be relevant to you.
Looking at the design and layout of the return you’ll have time to share your experiences and talk through the tax return.
This year I am adding a section on Making Tax digital, as HMRC are moving towards a digital record and reporting system. I will explain what this will mean for you & when the deadlines are.
During this course you will:
• Understand if you need to complete a tax return
• Consider what you need to prepare for the return
• Look at how much detail or evidence you will need to submit
• Look at examples of expenses that are allowed
• Understand how to log on and sign in
• Have an overview of the tax return
• Go through the checklist to tailor your return
• Making Tax Digital deadlines & what it means for you
This workshop is part 1 of 2 events I'm running to help you with your Tax return. This part is learning/reminding us about what’s in the tax return and what you need to prepare to complete your tax return.
It will hopefully leave enough time for you to work on your tax return and submit before the deadline of 31st Jan.
Please note: This session is for people that are self employed.

What will we cover?
No question is too silly! We will be tackling everything from:
- Do I need to complete a tax return?
- What do I need to prepare & how much detail or evidence do I need?
- Examples of expenses that are allowed
- some pitfalls to watch out for.
- what do I do if I'm both employed and self employed?
- Using your own car for work
- Working from home
- Benefits you don’t need to declare
- Understanding and paying the tax
- Terminology - what does this mean?
I've been doing my own tax returns a long time as well as giving workshops on them & know a fair bit about doing them. I am also a business adviser! I will also be encouraging others to share their tips and knowledge, so bring your top tips along too. This clinic aims to help as much as we can, but I dont promise to know every single answer, and I will refer you on if you need a specialist.
It would be helpful if you could email as many of your questions in advance, and then I will group similar queries together.
Please send your queries to emma@thinkinng.org as far in advance as possible, so I have time to include them and also to prepare, however addititional questions can be asked on the night & I will get through as many questions as I can!
- I will send you the zoom link to this meeting shortly before it starts.
- There will be a maximum of 20 people in this workshop in order to allow time for questions.
