How new architecture can equip old buildings for a sustainable future in the service of the community
About this event
Conservation-led regeneration - Clissold House, Newington Green Unitarian Chapel and Toynbee Hall
Richard Griffiths will talk about three historic building projects carried out by his practice, how the buildings have been restored to bring out their historic and architectural qualities, and how a new layer of architectural interest has been created to equip them for a sustainable future in the service of the community. Following his talk fellow architect Angela Brady will chat to Richard about his work and pose questions from the YouTube audience.
Richard is Director of Richard Griffiths Architects, founded in 1993 and specialising in the creative repair and conversion of old buildings. The practice has established a particular reputation for award-winning new design in historic contexts.
He was Cathedral Architect for 18 years at St Albans Abbey and for 16 years at Southwark Cathedral, where the Millennium buildings won seven architectural wards, including an RIBA Award. He has been responsible for major regeneration projects at Sutton House and Eastbury Manor for the National Trust, Kenilworth Castle for English Heritage and projects for historic houses in public parks at Clissold House, Hackney, and Valentine’s Park, Redbridge. As joint architect for the conversion of Sir George Gilbert Scott’s Midland Grand Hotel, into a 5* hotel and residential apartments, he restored the public rooms and designed the new wing of the hotel.
Richard’s book, Old Buildings, New Architecture, describes the challenges in creating architecture by adding a new layer to old buildings. A discount code will be given during the LIVE event.

She has a particular interest in hospital interiors fit outs, public and private housing projects and sustainability in the built environment.
