Event description
Join us in welcoming the return of Dr Nic Morton as he delivers the fourth, and last talk, of a series of talks on the Crusades.

About this event

The conquest of Constantinople, capital of the Byzantine Empire, by the armies of the Fourth Crusade in 1204 represents a crucial turning point in history. It was a crucial moment in the long-term decline of the Byzantine Empire and also a never-forgotten calamity in relations between the Catholic and Orthodox Christian faiths. But how did it come about? How did a crusading army destined to assault Alexandria in Egypt end up veering wildly off course and assaulting the heavily fortified capital of the Christian Byzantine Empire?

In this talk he will discuss:

- The overall history of the Fourth Crusade and the events which culminated in the fall of Constantinople.

- The various heated debates surrounding the question of who was responsible for the crusade’s diversion towards Constantinople and ultimately for the city’s overthrow.

- The Fourth Crusade’s long-term implications, both for the future history of the Byzantine Empire but also on relations between the Catholic and Orthodox faiths.
