Online workshop: Linger with Hogarth
Overview
Barts Heritage has partnered with Limina Collective, specialists in mindful art observation, for this online session, which invites participants to slow down and experience art in a reflective and restorative way.
During this session, we will take a close look at William Hogarth’s painting The Good Samaritan, which was installed in 1737 in the Grade I listed North Wing of St Bartholomew's Hospital in the City of London. This setting adds an additional layer of historical and emotional resonance to the painting.
After a short guided meditation, we will spend time being gently led through a sustained and attentive looking practice, followed by writing prompts designed to help explore personal responses to the artwork. We will tune into specific details within the painting, hear about Hogarth as an artist, the social and historical context of the work’s creation, and how it relates to other paintings of its period. The session will also introduce the principles and benefits of slow looking at art, including its capacity to foster presence, insight, and wellbeing.
