About this Event
Welcome back
Due to Covid-19 restrictions we realise the difficulties in attending workshops on the estate, therefore we have created some online workshops to engage with your pupils. These lessons will be taught by the Dumfries House Education team live in your classroom through zoom or using a similar software that you are able to use within your school.
Workshops
Sustainability in food is a hot topic with many aspects and approaches to be considered. These online sessions have been designed to make the concept relatable and relevant to students. It will aid them in making considered food choices by enhancing their understanding of the impact of different food production processes on both themselves and the environment.
These sessions have been designed with the National 5 Hospitality Practical Cookery – ‘understanding and demonstrating knowledge of the importance of sourcing sustainable ingredients’ outcome in mind, however they are suitable for students S2 and above.
Sustainability: Field to Fork: Food Journeys in Vegetable Production
Discover a range of vegetable produce we can grow here in Scotland and take an in-depth look at the production process of one such product.
Explore the reasons food travels round the world, the impact of food miles and learn how to interpret the information given on food packaging to help you make considered food choices.
Sustainability: Farm to Fork: Egg Choices
Food can be produced to different standards, but what does really that mean for the animals involved, our health and the planet? How can our choices impact on that?
Focusing on eggs, this session helps students explore the sustainability issues that arise from different methods of egg production, namely organic and free-range methods.
Students will be able to better inform their opinions by debating the positives and negatives of both systems in relation to our ability to feed ourselves sustainably.
