Event description
Online Writing Retreats - structured sessions to focus on your writing with peer support

About this event

PGR Presenter: Lynne Elliot (LSTM)

Our writing retreats provide structured sessions where you can make progress with your writing, working to timed sessions and with breaks to experience community support and benefit from peer accountability. You can use the sessions for your writing, or any other work that you need to progress with, producing diagrams, calculations, writing code and so on.

These writing retreats will continue to take place online this summer, mostly on Tuesdays.

All postgraduate researchers are welcome to join us at any upcoming events. You only need to sign up once here and then you will receive regular invitations to all upcoming events, with no obligation to attend all the sessions scheduled**.

The sessions will be held as follows:

August 2021

  • 03 Aug 2021, 9:45 - 16:45 hours*
  • 10 Aug 2021, 9:45 - 16:45 hours*
  • 17 Aug 2021, 9:45 - 16:45 hours*

These meetings will be hosted in Zoom. Zoom meeting details will be shared with all PGRS who signed up to this list.

What are Online writing retreats?

Often the most challenging aspect of thesis writing, or any other writing for that matter, is finding the time and space to sit down and focus on doing the actual writing. A writing retreat is simply designated time and space away from your normal workplace where you can focus on writing and nothing else, within a structured session that provides set times for writing and regular breaks. During the period of Covid-19 we need to meet virtually, but we hope that the sessions can still provide structure and a degree of community support.

By meeting regularly we can gain mutual support through discussing our personal difficulties in writing in this current period

-  We can share good tips in writing practice

-   And the meetings can provide some peer accountability that will help our motivation and avoid common routes for procrastination.

Previous participants have said:

‘I found that without interruptions, my productivity went up.’

‘I have had trouble focussing on my work recently and feel that attending the workshops would make me set aside time for writing/planning my project.’

‘It enabled me to work better on my writing tasks as I had peers around me doing the same thing in a quiet and conducive environment.’

**Single registration system: To manage this process, and make the arrangements easy for you and for us, we will use just one sign-up form in Eventbrite. By signing up to this list now, you will gain advance notification when new dates are planned for the Retreats,  as well as timely emails with Zoom meeting links and other relevant event information for each event( and may be ignored if you do not wish to attend on that date).

Basically, this registration simply provides us with an email list to keep you informed of these events and you may choose whether to attend on a regular basis or once every few months.  We do not expect you to attend all events.

If you no longer wish to receive these emails, please cancel your registration for this event on Eventbrite .
