Description

Inaugural lecture of Professor Scott Pirie

Personal Chair of Equine Clinical Sciences

The Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies has a long-standing track record in both equine asthma and equine grass sickness (equine dysautonomia) research and Professor Scott Pirie has continued down these exploratory pathways throughout his academic career.

With equine grass sickness, discovery of the elusive aetiological agent remains the “holy grail”; whereas, the current priorities in equine asthma-based research include further elucidation of the role of various airborne agents in disease pathogenesis, the potential impact of mild equine asthma on athletic performance and the characterisation of different disease endotypes.

In this inaugural lecture, Professor Pirie will primarily discuss his involvement in these disparate fields of study and the investigative strategies adopted with the aim of attaining these research goals. In addition, he will discuss his more recent venture into the field of post-operative ileus, a relatively common and potentially fatal complication of intestinal surgery.

As well as demonstrating the inherent challenges and obstacles associated with equine clinical research, his presentation will also highlight the potential pitfalls as well as benefits of the bidirectional translational application of research findings across species; hopefully casting doubt on any assumption that “only fools on horses work”.

This lecture is free and open to all.

This lecture will be followed by a reception outside the auditorium.
