Event description

Description

This is an internal ONS Event Only

Fake news, and 'alternative facts' represents a challenge to democracy. Discussions around Brexit and American elections have begun to question the role that statistics and analysis plays in democracy. This talk will explore some of the challenges we face in ONS - in particular getting our statistics, our analysis and content to shine through and connect with people.

The talk will look at examples from the Data Journalism community and our own work within ONS to illustrate the range of different approaches we can take in communicating with our audience and the benefits these approaches have.

Objectives/Learning outcomes:
- An understanding of the changing news landscape.
- The challenges we have connecting the general public with statistics and analysis.
- An appreciation of the types of content that can work and the routes to create this.
