ONS Local has been established by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) to support evidence-based decision-making at the local level. We aim to host insightful events that connect our users with exciting developments happening in subnational statistics and analysis at the ONS and across other organisations. Chris Lloyd is Professor of Geographical Information Science at Queen's University Belfast. The presentation will introduce a programme of research which has used Census data and the Indices of Multiple Deprivation to explore how deprivation has changed in recent decades in neighbourhoods across the UK.
ONS Local is delighted to host this innovative research into deprivation at the local level in the UK. The results show that deprivation is extremely persistent in some locales and that this presents particular challenges. It is argued that policy should take account of deprivation histories in order to design and implement effective interventions aimed at reducing spatial inequalities. Allied research on a UK deprivation index covering all of the four nations and a new Ethnic Group Deprivation Index will also be outlined briefly.
This event is open to all; we anticipate it will be of most interest to local authority analysts working on deprivation and poverty.
