About this event

  • Event lasts 45 minutes

ONS Local has been established by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) to support evidence-based decision-making at the local level. We aim to host insightful events that connect our users with exciting developments happening in subnational statistics and analysis at the ONS and across other organisations. This webinar is presented by the ONS’ Data Science Campus, Economic Applied Data Science for Government & Strategic Technologies squads.

Transport networks don’t work the same everywhere — their performance can vary significantly from place to place. Unfortunately, comparing them is often difficult due to inconsistent, outdated, or incomplete data. This makes it challenging to understand how transport influences access to jobs and other opportunities.

In this project, we demonstrate how free, open-source tools and data can help uncover these differences. We’ve developed a consistent, scalable method to estimate how many jobs people can reach — depending on the type of job, mode of transport (such as public transport, car, bike, or walking), and time of day. This enables fair comparisons across small local areas.

Our approach produces detailed, high-resolution data across Great Britain, both spatially and temporally. This allows us to closely examine how transport access varies by location and time of day, helping to reveal local patterns and challenges. Designed to be affordable and cloud-scalable, our method is also flexible — making it suitable for exploring broader questions about access to services and opportunities.

This event is open to all; we anticipate it will be of most interest to anyone working on transport and job opportunities in local authorities.
