This one-day event is aimed at fostering an open dialogue around the current state of play – and the future of – open access monographs. Providing a space for learned societies and subject associations to discuss the challenges and the benefits of OA, the event will bring together representatives from stakeholders across the HE sector.

The event aims to:

• Inform learned societies and subject associations about the current state of play with regard to open access academic books;
• Explore some of the challenges of open access monographs, and examine how these might be addressed;
• Demonstrate different routes to open access from a range of publishing models;
• Showcase some examples of long-form open access projects by academics;

All sessions aim to include ample time for interventions from the floor; a conclusory feedback session will ensure all attendees are able to share their thoughts on open access academic books.

The OA monograph: Where are we now? Introduction and round table discussion

9.30am – 11.15am

The aim of this opening session is to foster an open dialogue around the current state of play of open access monographs, and to provide the opportunity for attendees to share their thoughts on OA. Representatives from a range of organisations will offer short position statements on open access monograph, which will act as a springboard for wider discussion from the floor.

A range of authors, from different stages of their academic careers, will discuss their experience of publishing an OA academic book. Speakers will discuss how they found the process of publishing OA, highlighting challenges, benefits and any lessons learnt.
