About the event

With our friends at the UK Open Government Civil Society Network, the Electoral Reform Society Cymru is co-hosting this roundtable to explore if and how Welsh civil society organisations can be involved in the network's work.

The Open Government Partnership is an international initiative set up to provide a platform for reformers inside and outside governments around the world to develop and share reforms that “promote transparency, empower citizens, fight corruption and harness new technologies to strengthen governance”. Since its foundation in September 2011, over 2,000 commitments have been made by 65 participating countries, covering a third of the world’s population. Find out more about the OGP.

The UK was a founding member of the OGP in 2011. Since then it has produced two National Action Plans (2011-13 & 2013-15), and is due to agree and publish its third (2016-18) by the end of 2015. Currently the devolved governments of Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales fall under the UK’s membership of the OGP. However, the involvement of the devolved administrations in the OGP has been minimal; the Scottish government contributed one commitment on open contracting to the previous action plan.

At this roundtable we will discuss what the OGP can contribute to Wales and vice versa, and if and how civil society in Wales would like the Welsh Government to participate in the process.
