Event Details

This launch event for the Open Government Project - hosted jointly by the Cabinet Office Transparency Team and UK Open Government Civil Society Network - will kick off a series of events and conversations interrogating what it means to be an open and transparent government and ask how far we can stretch our collective ambition.

Over the next six months, civil society and government will work together to develop our new open government National Action Plan (NAP). This plan will set the standards for open government, with clear commitments, milestones and benchmarks against which we can measure our progress.

The event

This launch event will bring together representatives from central and local government and civil society to explore our vision for a more open, accountable and responsive government. Participants will hear from leading thinkers on a range of topics, including: access to information, civic participation, public accountability, technology and innovation, open data and anti-corruption.

Attendees will have a chance to participate in an open policy making process to identify the problems we would like to resolve through the NAP. The event will focus on setting the direction for the NAP and collecting innovative and ambitious ideas for the kind of commitments we can pursue.

Please note: We have now closed registrations for this event.

Whilst this event is the launch of the process, ongoing participation in the project is not limited to those attending. If you are unable to attend but would like to be involved in this project, please email us to be kept informed as this project progresses. If you would to join the UK Open Government Civil Society Network, please sign up via its online forum.

The UK is a founding member of the Open Government Partnership (OGP), established in 2011 to provide an international platform for domestic reformers committed to making their governments more open, accountable, and responsive to citizens. Since then, the OGP has grown from eight countries to 65 participating countries. In all of these countries, government and civil society are expected to work together to develop and implement ambitious open government reforms.

A requirement of membership to the OGP is the biennial publication of a NAP, containing concrete and measurable commitments to drive innovative reforms in the areas of transparency, accountability, and citizen engagement. The UK’s third NAP is due to be published by the end of 2015 and will cover a 30 month period.
