Event description
Speak to social researchers from across government about their roles and application tips in our new networking event.

About this Event

Social researchers plan, design, conduct and manage social research projects, reporting on findings in order to shape policy or to examine the effectiveness of existing policy.

As well as learning about the crucial role of social research across government departments, this networking session will allow you to ask questions directly to current social researchers about and help you develop links to help you through the application process. You’ll be placed in smaller groups so you can get advice tailored to you, or listen in on the variety of career journeys.

This event is specifically targeted to those who are from underrepresented backgrounds, particularly black and minority ethnic students.

Upcoming session includes:

  1. What is Government Social Research (GSR) (5 min)
  2. Hear about one social researcher's career journey (10 min)
  3. Entry routes (5 min)
  4. Application tips (5 min)
  5. Break out rooms (20 min)
  6. Day in the life of a social researcher in government (10 min)
  7. Break out rooms (20 min)
  8. Close (5 min)

Speak to social researchers from across government including from:

  • Department for Work and Pensions
  • Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy
  • Department for Education
  • Cabinet Office
  • Ministry of Justice

Who is this for?

The session is open to all undergraduate and postgraduate students from any discipline which includes a substantial social research methods component.

We want to inspire and encourage students from groups which are under-represented in the civil service, such as ethnic minority and lower socio-economic backgrounds, to consider GSR careers.
