Description

Labour has changed greatly in the last 3 years. Society has also changed and become more divided. How can Labour take on the challenges that these huge changes in culture present both internally and externally.

Join Open Labour for an event where we can discuss these issues in facilttated groups. Attendees will split into allocated groups and select one or two topics with a facilitator and notetaker.

This is a National event hosted by West Yorkshire Open Labour Facilitated by Cllr Tom Miller, Co-Chair of Open Labour (TBC), Rachael Ward, Open Labour Editor (TBC) and Dr Jo Ingold, Chair of West Yorkshire Open Labour

Closing Reflections by Alex Sobel MP

Themes:

1. Shut out: has the left become less inclusive? How can we improve the practice of party democracy? Who are the allies we need in Labour and how can we work with them? How can we work in sections of the party to make sure Open Labour speaks up for those who are under-represented or oppressed?

2. Truth, fake news & the establishment What does the new left media mean for Labour members? Is it better or worse than printed media for an open politics of the left? What should we think about confronting right-wing bias? What are the threats and opportunities for us as activists?

3. Rigged?: Can Labour really get the economy we want? How do the shape of our economy and our politics affect each other? What does Labour’s industrial strategy mean? What are the key principles we support and oppose? How are does Open Labour relate to other‘factions’ on economics?

4. Ready to win? How optimistic or pessimistic should we be about where Labour’s electoral chances? Who are we persuading to support us at the next election, and who do we need to reach - and how do we know? What are the other key issues apart from Brexit? Where has austerity left the UK culturally and attitudinally?
