Open Saturday: Bioarchaeology
Event Information
About this Event
We will bring you a variety of activities, topical conversations, virtual tours of the campus and much more, all brought to you from the comfort of your home by our scientists, technicians and software developers.
The Wellcome Genome Campus site in Hinxton has undergone successful archaeological excavations, which were conducted by Oxford Archaeology. For our November Open Saturday event, we will be joined by staff from Oxford Archaeology and genomics scientists from our campus, who will run interactive workshops for all!
2:00-2:30
Enjoy an introduction and virtual tour of the Wellcome Genome Campus
2:30-2:45
Join Louise Loe, Head of Burials, who will look at the study of human remains from archaeological sites
2:45-3:00
Join Clemency Cooper, Community Archaeology Manager at Oxford Archaeology, to determine what materials rot (or not!) in the ground. What survives for archaeologists to discover during excavations and what can they learn from this?
3:00-3:15
Petra Korlevic is a Postdoc working on a project nicknamed "Neandersquito", which focuses on extracting DNA and sequencing historic malaria transmitting mosquitoes. In this talk we will explore what it takes to sequence DNA from old samples, from fossil bones to historic specimens stored in museum archives.
3:15-4:00
Q&A session with all of our presenters.
Feel free to attend everything, or just drop in for one or two of the activities.
