Description

Open Voice - Strategies for Surviving the December Rush

With Annie Davenport Turner LSTAT, AAI - Creative Alexander Technique for singers

That time of year is looming again; 23 Messiahs, countless corporate festive gigs, and important auditions and performances all crammed into a few weeks… And you know Christmas shoppers will be having a great time dawdling around town while you need to do a thirty minute journey in ten minutes, switch seamlessly from Hark the Herald to audition aria, stay calm whilst doing your entire Christmas shopping in one 45-minute gap between rehearsal and concert, and to achieve all this with a threatening or actual cold!

In this Open Voice session (two dates available) using Alexander Technique, Body Mapping, Word Play, tools and ideas in movement and in stillness, and through the elements of playfulness and compassion, we will look at all these situations, and others pertinent to you, and how they impact on your sense of being able to cope, and we will discover strategies for you to find support, space, and sanity within the mayhem.

- Releasing the tension of illness-anxiety.

- Sensing space and time where there seems none.

- Self-care in the midst of mayhem.

- Feeling strong during auditions.

- Reducing the ‘It’s too much, my head is bursting’ feeling.

- Finding freshness in the 43rd singing of ‘Once in Royal...’

- Flexibility in rapid genre-switching...

- Singing to people who aren’t listening.

- Micro catch-up moments to employ anywhere.

- How to really switch-off when you can.

- And bring your own conundrums and challenges too.

The class is for just 8 singers in order to give time to everyone. The class will mostly involve situtional groupwork, but please do bring a short piece to sing for context work. An accompanist will be provided.

Student feedback:

"Annie came to the rescue at a time when prolonged illness and traumatic life events combined to create so much tension I could barely sing more than a fifth. She helped me release the built-up trauma and tension from my body and get my voice back on track so I was working again within the month." (Sarah)

"Working with Annie has been the perfect compliment to both singing lessons and performing professionally. She's enhanced my technical, physical and emotional awareness, all within a safe environment."

(Rob Clark. Graduate GSMD, baritone with Voces8)

"Singing teaching is often so metaphorical because you can't see your instrument, but Annie helps you to physically feel what teachers mean, so it's not guess work any more."
