Welcome back to our community workshops!

Our dedicated woodworking and DIY spaces are open again for our regular Open Workshop Member Sessions. During the workshop session you will have access to a wide range of large-format tools, your individual workbench and be supported by our friendly workshop volunteers and staff while you work on a project of your own choosing.

The session is 3 hours long. Of which the first hour will be a safety induction of the machines and the health and safety of working in a community workshop. This open workshop session has a level 4 induction. The general induction is compulsory for anyone attending the open workshop session, even for those members who have previously completed an induction. Everyone who has attended the induction will receive a badge and won’t be required to attend the first hour on their next visit.

**** Please note that these sessions are volunteer run and access to machinery will depend on the level of induction of the workshop monitors & leads. Each session will have a level system ranging from 1 - 5 that will indicate which machines & tools you will be able to use and be inducted in during the session.

1. = Basic health & safety, basic hand tools
2. = Handheld power tools, standing sander
3. = Mitre saw, band/scroll saw, plunge saw, drill press
4. = Table saw, planer, router (table & handheld)
5. = Lathe

+ Requirements & policies

• Have an active membership at the Edinburgh Tool Library. Sign up or renew your membership here
• Out of courtesy to other members we ask you not to book two weeks in a row.
• Open workshop sessions can be booked a week in advance, and will depend on the availability of our workshop volunteers.
• You can cancel your booking 48 hours in advance. This will give us the opportunity to offer the workbench to another member on the waitlist. If you fail to attend the session, we have the right to deduct a no-show fee donation of £5 from your registered card on Myturn.
• If a session is fully booked, sign up for the waitlist to receive notifications of last minute cancellations.

+ Covid Precautions

Capacity Limits: The workshop sessions will have a limit of 4 participants. This will allow for social distancing and help reduce the risk.

Booking required: Your workbench at the Open Workshop Session needs to be booked in advance. Walk-ins will be denied access.

Masks required: All participants, volunteers and staff are required to wear a mask whilst in the workshop. Unless you’re exempt from wearing a mask, you will be asked to wear a face shield instead.

Air flow: Extraction fans are used at all times and windows/doors will be open for air circulation.
