Event description

Description

Based on what is known about children’s testimony, memory and the impact of trauma, this interactive multidisciplinary symposium introduces strategies that effectively safeguard both children and potential evidence.

Much child abuse goes unreported. We now know that adult responses to early concerns are key to children’s safety.

Full of practical examples, this symposium shows those working with children how to safely ‘open doors’ by responding carefully to things children say and do.
Based on international research and in line with current guidance, this symposium gives lawyers and supervisors a framework for evaluating the early pick up of safeguarding concerns.
Triangle’s mission is to reposition children and young people in society as competent communicators and active agents in their own lives.

The speakers lead the field in research and practice, combining knowledge from policing, law and psychology.
Penny Cooper is a well-known and widely published Professor of Law and Barrister with particular expertise in witness evidence.
The other speakers work together in Triangle’s forensic interviewing, intermediary and training teams. Reg Hooke and Ann Stuart MBE share a background in child protection policing and safeguarding training. Dr Michelle Mattison and Dr Kim Collins lecture in psychology at the Universities of Chester and Teesside respectively. Ruth Marchant and Charlie Orrell have backgrounds in psychology and speech and language therapy, specialising in children’s evidence.
